In September 2007, a University of Florida student was tazed for resisting law enforcement personnel during a presentation by U.S. Senator John Kerry. The incident was videotaped by several people in the audience, uploaded to YouTube, and by the next day more than 500,000 people had viewed the video. When CNN and the network sites latched onto the story, “don’t taze me bro” went viral.
In his presentation, Joe Hice, APR, U.F.’s Associate Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing, will discuss the impact of the shock heard round the world on U.F.’s image and how the university managed the situation using new media tools including social networks, blogs, and classic internet activities.
